To ensure compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, staff expected to undertake the role of fire marshal (often called fire wardens) require more comprehensive fire safety training than other employees. Their role may include:
• helping any members of the public, visitors and/or disabled persons evacuate;
• checking designated areas to ensure everyone has left;
• using firefighting equipment if safe to do so;
• liasing with the fire and rescue service on arrival;
• shutting down vital or dangerous equipment; and
• performing a supervisory/managing role in any fire situation.
Fire Marshals should receive training when appointed to the role, then at regular intervals thereafter, i.e. every two years as a maximum, or after any significant changes.
